Can a Felon Vote?

25 May 2026: This month one of my Book Clubs read “The New Jim Crow” by Michelle Alexander.  Much of Alexander’s discussion centered around the destruction of people’s lives due to our prison system.  She wasn’t talking only about the convicted.  She included the family of; the friends of and society as a whole. One of the points that sparked my interest concerned the rights denied a convicted felon.  We all know about the voting controversy.  But did you know a felon has to check the “have you been convicted of a felony” box on various applications?  This would include Section 8 Housing; food stamps; jobs; etc. So, I thought to myself: “Isn’t there a convicted felon who is voting by mail and living in government housing at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave in Washington, D.C.”?
