Major Richard Star Act
What is the Major Richard Star Act about?
This act would allow combat injured veterans to receive their full military retirement and their VA disability payments.
Letter #1 by BT (Star Act)
Senator Roger Wicker:
By now you have noticed what your constituents are saying about your vote against the Major Richard Star Act. To be clear, your constituents want you to vote for this legislation.
But here is something else to consider and it has to do with your retirement from the Air Force and Congress.
Your high three years would be $174,000 annually. Eighty percent of this is $139,200 annually. Let’s go with the low figure for your retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force: $66,000 annually. Would you think it would be fair to you to reduce your Congressional pension by deducting $66,000 from the $139,200 which in effect would negate your time spent in the Air Force? Isn’t this exactly what you are doing to our injured veterans?
Senator Wicker, you need to rethink your vote on the Major Richard Star Act. It is the right thing to do.
Sincerely,

Senator Wicker’s reply to the Major Richard Star Act letter:
Thank you for contacting me to express your support for the Major Richard Star Act (S. 1032). I appreciate having the benefit of your views on this issue.
As an Air Force veteran, I will always advocate for both our veterans and those currently serving. In this year’s reconciliation bill, I secured more than $7 billion to improve service member quality of life, strengthening compensation, housing, healthcare, childcare, education, and more.
The U.S. Senate recently considered the Major Richard Star Act. I have concerns regarding the overall cost of the bill. The Department of Defense already has a Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC) funds, which provides tax-free payments to retired veterans with combat-related disabilities. Please know that I will continue to evaluate ways to strengthen benefits for veterans.
Be assured I will keep your views in mind as the Senate considers legislation affecting disability compensation and pay for retirees with combat-related disabilities. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can ever be of assistance.
With best wishes, I am,
Letter #2 by BT (Star Act)
Several of our members… your constituents… have received another form letter from your office. This form letter was in response to our letters to you about the Major Richard Star Act.
Regarding your support for our veterans, I strongly disagree with your voting record regarding our military members.
1. You voted to confirm Pete Hegseth and have done nothing as this unqualified individual has dismissed some of our most experienced officers.
2. You have supported this unqualified President as he has started this illegal war that has cost our veterans injuries and in some cases their very lives.
3. You have done nothing about the unqualified individuals being sent to craft a peace deal to get us out of this illegal war of choice.
Don’t lecture me about your support of our veterans. You are lacking in critical thinking on this particular subject.
Specifically, you voted against the Major Richard Star Act over your concern about its costs but support an illegal war that has cost much more than the $9-10 billion you claim would be added to the budget by the Major Richard Star Act.
Mississippi deserves better and so do our veterans.
Sincerely,
https://www.wicker.senate.gov/
