Fed Up Friday

Dear Senator Wicker:

I write to you today to remind you of the oath you swore as a United States Senator “to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic” and to ask when and how you will uphold your oath in light of the Trump Administration’s repeated attacks on the First Amendment, as described below:

·      The firing of Jimmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, and others due to pressure from the FCC

·      Deportations and detentions of student protesters

·      Executive orders punishing law firms for representing clients and hiring attorneys with perceived interests against Trump

·      Lawsuits and investigations against news outlets like The New York Times, The Washington Post, ABC, NBC, and CBS over unflattering coverage of Trump

·      Firing career civil servants and subject matter experts believed to disagree with Trump

·      Withholding vital funding from universities, hospitals, and scientific researchers

Both you, Senator, and your staff are known to tell constituents that “the courts will handle” these concerns. However, the courts are not equipped to “handle” the barrage of First Amendment attacks coming from the White House on a daily basis. And you, Senator, were elected and swore an oath to defend the Constitution from such attacks.   All I ask is that you do the job you were elected to do and use whatever authority and leverage you have to rein in Trump and stop his attacks on what is perhaps the most American of our constitutional rights – the First Amendment.

Please provide me a substantive response to these concerns in writing within two weeks.

Sincerely,

Dear Senator Hyde-Smith:

As you well know, Senator, the courts are not equipped to address the barrage of First Amendment attacks coming from the White House on a daily basis from the Trump administration.
