Letter by MF (Health Care)
I am writing in defense of science and in favor of compassion. Both have been sorely lacking, especially in terms of health care. Across the globe, people no longer receive vaccinations for diseases like polio, malaria, tuberculosis, and measles. These life protecting services had been supported by the now defunded U.S.A.I.D. As a result, outbreaks of preventable illnesses have become much more likely. If compassion for others is not enough of a call for action, remember illnesses know no boundaries. Communicable diseases are threats to everyone, not just abroad but at home as well.
In the U.S., we have been given information that is misleading at best and potentially deadly at worse. Despite substantial research to the contrary, President Donald
Trump and his Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. continue to spread false claims about links between vaccinations and autism. There is no connection between the two, much less the suggested causal relationship. Resources would be better spent on real issues like the recent uptick in measles in cities across the country.
In addition to vaccines, the administration is suggesting another source of autism: Tylenol/Acetaminophen. The rumor now is that taking Tylenol when pregnant might also be a cause of autism. What then do you do if you’re an expectant mother and you have pain and/or a fever? According to President Trump, you don’t seek relief in a known, safe treatment; you “just fight like hell”.
No matter where you live, healthcare policy should be based on hard scientific evidence not untested theories. It should berooted in rigorous, multi-faceted, and data driven research. Instead, the Trump administration slashed funding and fired staff for doing these very same in-depth studies.
Wealthy and powerful countries like the United States must lead the fight for health world-wide. Compassion and accurate science are both valuable tools in meeting this challenge. Leaders must also listen to and share sound medical advice. The cost of not doing so is simply too much bear.
Sincerely,
